A trip to the shack in the woods...

I thought today I would show some pictures of my little haven in the mountains.

Whenever I go up to Fishcreek
(our forty acres about seventeen miles up a canyon),
I am usually welcomed by one of our horses.

This is Molly.

Below is the view out the door of the shack.

This has got to be my favorite place in the entire world.
It is so close to home, and yet it seems like you are in the middle of nowhere.
Actually...you ARE in the middle of nowhere!

Oh looky here...Bella would like a little camera time as well!!!
She's standing right behind the little shack, about four foot away from the rear wall.
I think she was sneaking up on me.

Which reminds me of a funny story.
A few years ago, I came up to spend the night here ALONE,
and I have to be honest....
sometimes I'm not very brave.
Well I spent the evening hiking around the property and then
came in to settle down for the night. I didn't hear anything outside
because I was watching a movie, when the next thing I know, there was a figure out the door.
It scared me to death and I was afraid to even move.
Because the light was on inside, I couldn't
make out the figure, so I turned the light
out so that whoever was there couldn't see me as easily
.(like, where was I going to go if they decided to come in)LOL!

And there in full glass door
(crazy I know), in the middle of nowhere to have a full glass door with no curtain))
was a horse staring at me!!!
I think he was enjoying the movie too.

I now have a curtain!

The horses have a well worn path down this fence because
we have the property on both sides of the road,
and we pasture the
naughty horses on one side and the not so naughty horses on the other.
(not really)
But we do separate them for various reasons.

So now brace yourself! This is not pretty!

We will get to the pretty part in a minute.
Yep...this is it.
Hopefully later this Fall, the shack won't be this ugly on the outside.
I'm planning on giving it a little face lift.

I would like it's outside to match it's inside.
Guess what color I want to paint it?
WHITE
of course!

On the inside it has a different feel.
I love coming up here and just sitting and reading my stash of Country Home magazines
that I keep up here. Lots of issues dating back over ten or so years.
Sometimes I take a long nap.
Sometimes I do both.

Now I'm going to shut up for awhile and just show a lot of pictures.

The little shack has a lot of mirrors.
I love reflections.

The green chippy bed my husband found at the landfill almost a dozen years ago.

So that is my little shack in the woods this year.
I posted about it last year too,
but wanted to do another post about how it looked this Summer.

I think it is funny that my husband and sometimes my son-in-laws
stay in here from time to time.
I wonder if they feel a little uncomfortable around all the foof?
So far they haven't complained.

I guess they could always sleep outside with the horses!

Here is a view to the other side of the road.
As you can see it is getting quite dry here this time of year.
The grass in the bottom is getting scarce so
we will be putting the horses on the hillside until snow flies.

And now Bella wants to say...

THE END.

  3. I like your little shack - inside and out. Do you remember the 1950's musical, Calamity Jane, with Doris Day? Calamity and the female love-interest move in together and turn a horrid old shack into a gorgeous, feminine bower! The song is called 'A Woman's Touch' and there is a youtube view here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swYl_rFe7Qk&feature=related

  9. Hi June, You did your magic to this shack and it became a beautiful place! It's perfect to get away from the daily routine and have some time for yourself. I'm not sure if I would be brave enough to spend a night alone out there. Had it been "The Horse Whisperer" you were watching when the horse looked into your window, lol?
    Have a wonderful weekend :-)!

  14. June, how beautiful, both your horses and the shack. Do you ride? My younger sister had a horse and a pony, she was the rider. Me, not so much, but I will always remember the joy ride her and I went on and I think I laughed the whole time. I bet your men do not mind the fluff because it means there is a woman's touch and that means love. I love when you share your home with us. I am sure the shack is going to look even more beautiful when you are through. Have a wonderful weekend.

  69. First, gorgeous photos, both of inside and outside your cabin. I found your blog from a comment you left on Wendy's (No Botox Allowed). You mentioned your hometown. Is it located not too far north of Athol? Cuz that's where I live. And you mentioned your son on your profile. I could swear that I saw him with a group of special-needs young adults when I was out shopping with my daughters the other day. I coundn't take my eyes off of that smiling, happy face. He really made quite the impression on me, and I am sure if it wasn't your son, this young man has the same condition that you described. What a joy!
I mention all this not to creep you out, but just to say "Hello" and "what a small world it is, isn't it?"

  72. What a charming story Junie... It was just like reading a fairie tale. You being the fair maiden who came upon a a lovely little cottage after getting lost in the woods.
Resting for a spell and only to wake frightened by a sound at the door... thinking perhaps it was the big bad wolf! Only to discover that it was a beautiful strong horse that had come to watch over you and make sure you were safe.

Even in "the end" she was looking back to make sure you were following her safely back home...

...and they lived happily ever after....

    Sweet dreams,

  84. Hello June, it was so kind of you to come to visit and to leave a note. I just want to tell you how lovely your little shack is..it's beautiful inside and out. I think the outside blends in to so well with the trees and fields. How brave of you to stay there all alone, I'd have jumped out of my skin seeing that figure! Tho' how marvelous to have the horses so nearby. I always always longed or a horse of my own, but City-living put paid to that, although I used to beg my Dad to change over the garden-shed to a stable...no luck! Ha Ha ;))

  85. Hi June
Long time no see :) I know I have been in a cave and I am just coming out... life gets busy. I loved this post with your horses and your beautiful shack but we must find another name for it becasuse it is far from a shack! Maybe sugar-shanty or maybe after you paint it you can call it the White House and you are the first Lady, I might add.
It is simply beautiful and I can see why you love it there.
    Have a wonderful day
    Blessings
    Rebecca

  90. Ok June, I want your property and everything on it! Does that sound to envious? I can not imagine having all that wonderful prettiness around me everyday. Of course, you'd have to come with the property as I know I couldn't keep it up like you do. I bet your grandkids have so much fun running around there.
    Beautiful pictures!

  93. Wow June - I need a little shack like yours for my ten year plus issues of Country Home and other publications! The "shack" is charming. Glad you posted again, I wasn't blogging a year ago. This terrain looks somewhat familiar. I wonder if you are near my family. Looks like aspen? Beautiful photos.

  94. Hi June, your little shack is a showcase of your wonderful decorating sensibility! Absolutely gorgeous. A shack it is no! A cozy cottage in the woods is more like it. I am sure that the guys feel it is an inviting space to hang out in too. I could come live there and be quite content, although I have to admit, I'm a bit of a fraidy cat at nite too. :) Hope you have a beautiful weekend. Tammy

You have a beautiful oasis to vacation at, right next door. LOL How wonderful is that?! Now I know why JOdie wants to stay there. That's okay, I'm fine with the studio. Funny. My Sister Molly always tells me only dogs, pigs and hourses are named Molly.
