Oh October...

I think the month of October is much too short.
Don't you think so too?
A month this beautiful should be at least 40 days long!!!

and I don't think that would even be long enough!

It has been so beautiful here.
The weather has been perfect for a 'perfect' Autumn.
We've had both rainy and mild.

I have been cutting a lot of the hydrangeas in their many different and varying
colors over the past few days.

The hydrangeas in this post are Limelight, a variety hardy to the zone I live in.

The changes in the garden have been so enjoyable to watch.

Every morning the change is dramatic.

I have been working so hard getting things transplanted and winterized.
Every day I'm out cutting back foliage, weeding and dividing perennials.

I have a small garden so I am able to manage it by myself without help.
It consists of one very large bed, with several smaller beds around the property.

I wish the entire property was in garden, but Dale thinks I have plenty to keep me busy.
(especially since he had to do a lot of it himself this year)

I would do without the large lawn area we have and plant it all in flowers and shrubs
if I had my way.

I am making the most of the area I have by planning more garden structures for Dale to build.
He is always so much help and always willing to build what I think will work in the space.

He retired this Spring from law enforcement and I am enjoying having him home more.
He is loving spending more time with the horses.

I dream of having a garden like Carolyn's at Aiken House & Gardens  but I will be content
going to her beautiful blog
viewing all of her amazing beds and beautiful garden rooms.
Did you know that she and her husband do all the work themselves too? And her garden is huge!

But, like I said, my own garden is very small and I have a lot crammed into it, so it does
entail a bit of work three seasons of the year.
It's the best kind of work!

My Centurion crab apple trees in the back yard are starting to change color
and before the leaves fall, they will be gorgeous.
I look forward to this every year.

I will be raking leaves soon, but I can't get too anxious or I will be raking them twice.

And just around the corner of the house it still looks like Summer.

This is the south side of the house and it has it's own little micro-climate.

The roses and sweet peas are still blooming like they were blooming a month ago.

I cut a little bouquet almost daily.

Sweet peas really are a remarkable little flower.
Lovely form and lovely fragrance.

I am still harvesting lavender and getting plenty for the sachets I will make this Winter.
It's tedious work getting it off the stem, but I just pop in a movie and work away.

For now, I still have many things on my to-do list to do before the snow comes.

SO,
I am going to start lobbying to make October at least ten days longer.

  1. I'll sign the 'Make October forty days' petition too! I love this month. Like you, I still have a few roses blooming and they are a lovely surprise.
How lovely to have your husband at home - I can't wait until I no longer work and can be home with TGD full time. You have a perfect match - you plan and your husband builds - couldn't be better!

  2. Hi June, I don't remember when we had a fall with so many wonderful sunny days like this year. It certainly makes it up for a summer with more rain than sunshine. November is my least favorite month, so I wouldn't mind if October would last 61 days and we just skip November :-).
It's wonderful that you still have roses and sweet peas blooming. I love you dried hydrangeas too though.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy your fall garden :-)!
    Big hugs to you,
    Julia

You say you have a small garden but it looks enormous to me so you must do something with the photo's to enlarge it. :)))))
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  4. I feel like we need to have lunch or something... just so I can catch up with you! Here it is October.. and the whole Spring and Summer came and went.. and I was mourning and busy too much to read any blogs.

I have missed you.. and I wish to sit with you and hear about your summer. * I wish!*

LOVELY-CHARMING and BEAUTIFUL pictures as always my friend.

Thank you for your friendship. It has meant a great deal to me in these last months.

  5. Your property is just wonderful June! I love the crab apple tree, the pops of red in the photo is W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U=L! It would be so nice to have flowers still blooming! I think my roses have stopped so I'll be making trips to the market to buy bouquets.
Have a wonderful week-end my friend!

  6. I was stunned to read that you have a small garden as it yields so many blooms. Clever you.

I loved your notion of not worrying about the raking as you'd be doing it twice, what a sage lesson for us all.

Enjoy all the gifts that your garden shares with you this weekend,

    Waving from over the seas.

  9. I'm lobbying with you for an at least 10 days longer October June, as Julia already said, our Summer was rather wet and since October it's sunny almost daily. You have the most beautiful garden dear June at every season! Just had to pin some of your pictures to my inspiration boards on Pinterest! I always thought your garden must be huge from your pictures and now I'm stunned reading that it is actually a small garden. Well not as small as mine is I'm sure. You are lucky to have your hubby home and help you with the landscaping and all! I'm like you trying to have a great variety of flowers and plants on my small garden plot and I think you're right, it is a lot of work, but so rewarding!
Btw I have a little surprise waiting especially for YOU at the end of my last blog post ;-)
Hugs from one Gardener to another!

  11. Hi June,

I can't believe how incredibly fast this year has gone and yes, 40 days in October would be great.
I love all your pretty flowers, the sweet peas, hydrangeas, roses and lavender, they are all so beautiful.
Do hope that you are enjoying the weekend and all the gorgeous flowers you have blooming still.

  12. June your gardens are always so beautiful. I just love how, from the pictures it looks like a secrete garden in certain spots. You have to turn a corner to see another of your smaller gardens. Between extra hours at work and the non stop rain, I am not sure if I will get all of my fall work done. I must say what I do love about this season is the continuous blooms that are coming from my roses. Have a wonderful week.

  14. June it must be true what they say about getting older. I heard that the older we get the faster time goes! LOL! Anyway it seems like yesterday that I was looking at photos of your summer garden. Your home and gardens are always a delight to the eyes and your photography is amazing.
You have created beautiful surroundings and I'm so glad that you share it with all of us.

  17. Precious June,

Like us, your October is more green and faded colors than BRIGHT ORANGES AND REDS than we are used to! I think warmer temps have kept us from really seeing the fall colors this year, but nonetheless, every season has brought with it the joy of anticipation!!!!

GOOD TO SEE YOU DEAREST! Anita

I love Carolyn's blog, too - it's like having a nice cup of tea and looking through a great garden magazine. :-) Oh my and these photos are just gorgeous, June!! So so pretty! Your garden is so inspiring. I'm definitely going to add limelight here. That first horizontal of the hydrangea in the bowl - wow! Hope your weekend is great!

  21. Good morning Dear June
I too was shocked to hear you say you have a small garden.. It seems huge compared to the one we had last year. I love the beauty of the garden and Spring with all of the new growth and lovely blooms but I must say I never really liked all of the work involved in upkeep.
I love visiting my two favourite Blogs to get my garden fix. Yours & Carolyn's in PEI as you mentioned. I am not sure where you two find the time to create such beauty in your gardens & your homes.. but thank you as I can't help but smile when I visit both of you.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy your time with Dale as he enjoys retirement!
    Hugs,

  23. I'm so into extending October with just a tiny less rain. This month has flown by and I still have so much yard work to do. I'm going to keep my figures crossed that the first part of Nov. is mild. I had to have 6 trees cut down because of pine beetles so no raking of needles. I won't miss that but I sure do miss my big trees. Don't worry I still have a maple and purple plum to provide many leaves to rake. I love all your pictures and especially those little sweet peas. Have a great week out in the yard and planning for next year! Hugs Junebug

  24. Gorgeous gor-geous-ness!

At our big home in the city, our backyard was nothing but walkways and garden beds. I'm sure the neighbors thought we were completely nuts when we brought in so much gravel, but it came out English-garden-beautiful and there wasn't a lawn to mow! :)

Enjoy this wonderful fall and don't work too hard, June!

  27. What a beautiful garden you have. Thanks for sharing it with us. Your posts are always bringing peace, tranquility and serenity into my days. Really; they are like an escape from this busy, hectic world, just like your romantic garden is I guess. Your garden doesn't seem like a small garden to me and over here it would not be considered a small garden at all but I guess that's because I'm on the other side of the world where we're all packed together more than where you live. I love the hydrangeas and what a treat to still have sweetpeas blooming now. Love the colour of the sweetpeas you're showing here. And I'm with you, October is always too short! Also, I would love to just remove our lawn and have more flowers and shrubs and the possibility of one of those crabappletrees you're showing us, love those little red apples on them and I bet the tree flowers pretty in the Spring. But my husband loves it just as it is and I'm not strong enough to do it myself. Guess I'll just have to keep on pleading to him and maybe some day...
    Bye,

  34. Hi June, oooh, I wish October was longer too... May and October are my most favorite months of all... and I wish they would both linger... like you, I feel like I missed a good part of Summer this year because of my surgery, and I want it to last a while longer... your garden is still so pretty... it looks sooo large in your photos on your blog, yet you say it is small... mine is definitely smaller than yours, I wish I had a larger one too... but it takes alot to maintain even the size it is... I am not complaining... I love it too!... can't believe how gorgeous your sweet peas still are!... and congratulations to Dale for retiring earlier this year!... he will always be a cop, just like Jack though... it never leaves them, which is okay too... I am excited you are coming to Utah... I sent you an email... enjoy your blissful Autumn weather... xoxo Julie Marie

They're just about done fortunately. :) All of my outside duties were completed during the first 2 weeks of October when we had just perfect autumn weather. 50. June, as always your photos are just STUNNING!! Love the ones of the yard and garden, showing how the change of seasons is making itself know. The birdbath filled with the fallen leaves almost made me cry, reminding me so much of the one that was in our yard at my mother's house. I could see it from my bedroom window and it always told me what the weather was, what the season was. Filled with leaves, it was autumn. The water frozen to ice, winter had arrived, and I love seeing it topped with a layer of "whipped cream" snow. Spring time and summer it was surrounded by the green shadows of the huge maple tree that it stood under. Ah, such lovely poignant memories of times gone by. The crabtree, another thing we had in the yard, and I remember well how gorgous it was, but how painful those little apples were to step on when they fell to the ground! :-) We have many of our childhood family pictures taken standing in front of that tree! thanks for all the memories today, and for yet another fabulous post!

I hope you are having a wonderful Sunday. ~Debby

  75. I know very well your friend's blogs, Carolyne, and its garden is gorgeous. However, I feel that yours is really lovely and you have created the right spaces, although, as you say, is small. I love your hydrangea, roses are beautiful and have a show!
I am in my garden I always get the feeling the overflow, but I like even so, a little confused but with lots of nooks and crannies to discover.
