Their old is my new

Don't you love giving a piece of trash a new home?

I love it and would prefer to do that than buy new any day.

Every thing in this post had years of wear and had already lived a lifetime before
I acquired them.
Many people would never give them a chance to grace their
homes.
Maybe many reading this post would even wonder what I could possibly see in them.

Like this old scratched up mirror propped up here inside this old frame.

This Summer while shopping a flea market with my daughters, I saw this
dilapidated old pink dresser.
I fell hard...not for the dresser itself, but for the awesome aging mirror it had.

You can't tell in these photos, but the mirror has beautiful veining and crackling.

I didn't bring it home because I needed another chest of drawers,
because I DON"T.
I brought it home strictly for the mirror.

Then there's this light fixture in my bath.
I finally got it hung after years of tripping over it no matter where I stored it.

I love that someone painted it pink

I love that it is scrolly

I love that it is hopelessly old-fashioned

and I love that it came with a friend!

This one escaped the pink paint and has it's original finish.

It is smaller in scale and hangs over the bathroom sink.

I fell in love with this style of light when I first saw some hanging in Robin's (Magnolia Pearl)
kitchen years ago in a magazine.
About a year after seeing the magazine feature of her beautiful home, I found these in a
cardboard box at a yard sale and there they sat until recently when I finally
had them re-wired and hung.

So,
for all those who have ever looked into this scratched up, chippy little mirror...

thank you for passing it on so I could add it to my own collection of 'new to me's'.

Oh my goodness....I would've flipped for that dresser too!! And the light fixture...oh man....they are both so sweet.

But what I'm really flipping for are the horses on your sidebar...I didn't know you had horses!? Now I really really really need to come visit you!!!!...:o)

  9. June, I may have told this story before here..but I have a good friend who is NOT an antiquer..but I love her all the same..she said to me one day." Why would anyone want to buy this stuff.."it's all been used" ! I laughed so hard.."that is actually the VERY reason I want it I told her, it has "history" behind it."
She looked a bit puzzled...I forgave her, because she just did not UNDERSTAND...the love we have for these forlorn treasures.
    Yours are most precious.

  10. Hi June, I love the the old anytime over something new, and I love your pink dresser and your gorgeous light fixtures. I've been saving antique light fixtures for years too and I'm fixing to start taking the ones we have now out and adding antique fixtures. I think it will make a great difference. I also love the look of an old mirror.... the more crackling and veining the better. Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!!

  15. Hello, my dear June, like you I prefer buying old over new for our home. These worn things have so much more character and soul than new items. I love each of your fantastic finds. For us vintage lovers all the pieces are just in perfect condition.
    Have a wonderful weekend :-)!

  18. What a charming post, June! I, too, treasure that which has been cast off, forgotten, overlooked, or just the object of disdain. I love finding new purposes for those pieces, and giving them life again!

They have character, and a story...and I just love that! I'm not into cookie cutter anything!

    The lighting is sooo wonderful!!

    Thank you for sharing!!

  26. I love your header - so you!
Old treasures are so much homier than new. Rewiring and rehanging an old light fixture gives a room depth and so much more interest than a new and sparkling chandelier.

  27. Dear Sweet June,
Everything here - the mirrors, the carryall, the light fittings etc. all look perfectly right for your home. I can never bring myself to buy new when there is so much charm from old weather beaten, preloved, shabby furniture - they just have "soul"! Those roses WOW! are they from your garden and did you dry them yourself. They look so gorgeous in that carry all.
Thank you for visiting me lately and leaving such a lovely comment. I think it is time for me to post some Spring garden images!
    Love and hugs,

  34. I am very much like you June, not very many items in my home are new, they have had a previous life. I enjoy taking something and seeing what I can do with it. A dresser for a bathroom vanity. Frames as wreaths. It also helps when something gets nicked or chipped by the kids because I know that it was never perfect when I bought it.
Your flowers are beautiful. We had the first small snowfall and I think the roses are finally done. I hope you are enjoying the Fall weather.

  47. June, I find new things to be poorly constructed and boring. Vintage items are interesting, have a past, a patina, and sometimes even a mystery. Your pinks are wonderful and you would enjoy a softly pink and purple 1950's tablecloth I have soaking right now that I bought today. olive

I developed a love for rescuing other peoples toss aways back when I was a little girl and my grandmother would give me 50 cents to go shopping down the street from her house at a small thrift store. I would spend hours choosing the perfect treasure. Little did she know what she had started.

I love the mirrors and the light fittings but, you know that I love everything that you own !!

  103. Girlie, you are singing
    my song....I'd rather see

  104. I know why you bought that dresser you didn't need with the crazy old mirror.. because you're smart, and you know what's beautiful... everything you touch gets more beautiful... you're like a magic fairy godmother, with a sweet spirit that makes things pretty and flowers grow...
And good grief, you are an amazing photographer!

  105. Hi dearest June - I didn't read all those other comment, so I'm not sure if someone else said exactly the same but I have to say it: That's no trash, these items are treasures! (But if you prefere it you may call them beloved trashures ;o))
Sending lots of Advent-Küschelbüschel to you, xxx Traude
