Spring!

Even the word Spring makes a smile come to my face.

I love this season of renewal, and even if I am a little behind
many of the places in the world as far the garden goes,
I am patiently waiting to catch up.
No trees leafing...yet
No lilacs blooming...yet
No peonies emerging...yet
But soon!

So I buy the flowers from the market and
plant a little Spring of my own in the house.

Like these beautiful pink tulips

I have been getting things done here even in the cool temps and sometimes very windy days.
I think my beds are almost ready for the 12 new roses I bought in Boise when I was there two
weeks ago. I have been covering them every night for protection from our still freezing overnight
temps because they were already leafed out.

Many of the beds needed to be widened to accommodate them,
and it is something I have been wanting to do for the past couple of years.
I need to make the beds deeper, and that means I have many plants to move around
so I can add the new roses to the beds.

I don't mind the hard work in the garden even when I ache head to toe by bedtime.
I just keep reminding myself that I am trimming the waistline
and strengthening my ever aging bones!

On days when I can't take the wind, I come inside and do a little spring cleaning.

The other day I cleaned the hutch that holds all my floral china.

This has to be my favorite chore in the house!!!

I love the look of them spread across the table all washed and sitting out to dry.

Then it's back into the hutch they go

In my last post I said that I had enjoyed the Winter and  had spent my time sewing and creating.
Here's just a few things I spent my time making.

A basket of stars I made at Christmastime.

darling little mouse my friend helped me with

new pajama bottoms for Summer nights

tons and tons of squares for patchwork quilts
(these took me many days this Winter to cut out, but now I have enough
for several quilt tops)

This is one of the many I have been sewing together.

Seeing all of my favorite fabrics sewn up makes me happy
they are finally being put to use.

I am working on one today full of bright patterns and colors
that will work perfectly for the porch this Summer.

I really think I am hooked on quilting now.

Darn it!

Another expensive habit...
just what I needed!

  6. June, you are wayyyy ahead of me gf. I look out the window and wonder when it will be time to get out there and dig in.
Your china is like no other. Just bliss. Heavenly bliss. I don't have any sweet china pieces, but what I have I love. Even if it's all from the thrift stores and mixed and matched.
I LOVE your PINK tulips and your pretty banner. So fresh and clean.
Keep going, spring is right around the corner ; )

  7. Hi June,
I love it when you put up a new post. I know the pictures are going to be lovely and so are your projects.
I cannot wait to see what your flower garden brings and I know you will show us all those lovely peonies.
    Your winter projects are beautiful.

  8. June, your pastel quilt squares are so soft and pretty. I need your cleaning spirit I tell you. I am sick with a dreaded cold and have done nothing but over the weekend we did trim 50 shrubs which is an ordeal that was well worth doing. My knockout roses are showing off right now. I cannot wait for your garden posts as your garden is so different than ones in this hot place. Blessings,Olive

  9. 12 new rose bushes!!! I am so jealous! I have been wanting to order more roses but till the construction on the outside of the house ceases I don't think it would be a good idea!

I have lilacs that are just now blooming- it is their first year of blooms so not a lot but I am sooo enjoying them! A male friend who goes to our fellowship is trying to kill his lilac :( - weed as he calls it - so I went over after fellowship Sunday and cut huge bouquets and filled vases for most of the rooms in the house!! Smells heavenly around here!!

Started my oriental poppy seeds that I ordered in seed trays yesterday. I should have started a bit earlier but just didn't have time. Am so hoping I will have some pretty ones like June was what I was thinking as I was getting the trays ready- I know I will have to wait till next year to even get a bloom but hopefully it will be worth the wait!!

Oh June you know how I love your beautiful photos- they bring joy to my heart to see such beauty!

  10. Ah yes, quilting can be expensive! But there are so many wonderful fabrics out there. I'm like you, June, I can slave away in the garden, ache like crazy when I get in bed, but I don't mind! It's the best therapy in the world.

  11. Oh Dearest June
Such stunning tulips, pretty china and Spring rose quilts top! - There are very few things that make us happier being surrounded by the things so dear to our hearts!.
I can see you have been working hard preparing your garden beds making room for the new roses - how exciting is that? I am sooo looking foreward to seeing them all in bloom!
Busy as a bee you have been cutting and stitching those gorgeous quilt tops. If you get a minute you might like to see a Spring rose quilt I have in my Etsy (on my blog)which I sewed a few years back - it is from my quilt collection.
I so enjoy my visits here - your heart shows through each and every image.
Sending you love, hugs and blessings,

  12. I think we were teased for so long that spring was on it's way out instead of in that we forgot we might have some freezes! I am so anxious to get working in my garden beds but I guess I have to be patient!

Your sewing projects are wonderful...I love the PJ bottoms, they are what I like to wear with T shirts at night. Love the little ruffle on the hems!

It looks like the quilting bug has bit you. It's a wonderful thing to do with all of your pieces and scraps though. Have fun with it!

  13. Once again I sit here with my mouth open and my heart racing! First, I LOVE your jammie bottoms, you must feel cozy and beautiful in them! Your new hobby fits you perfectly, that quilt top is really so sweet. I have yet to do any gardening (only raked them out so far) but the lilacs are just starting to bloom and Hannah has brought in a small bouquet for me along with the only purple tulip that showed up! Your dishes are as sweet as you are,

All of your winter projects were wonderful but, of all of them those Jammie bottoms speak to my heart. I want to make some for me!!! Have a great week.

  15. Oh Sista, look at all the pretties! I need to make me a pair or two of those jammie pants with ruffles. I'm sure you are the princess of the house in them! Plus you are the energizer bunny with all the project you got done and then to think digging new flower beds, you go girl! I'm aching from my weekend of digging and have so much more to do. Here's to Spring and the start blooming crazy! The other June!!

  16. Dear June,
I was driving through the countryside today and was in awe, as I am every Spring, of the beautiful blossom, the new lime green leaves emerging and the vibrant green in the fields....and, the bright yellow fields of the oil seed rape that is coming into flower. The most beautiful time of the year I think.
Your tulips are such a pretty pink. We are off to Amsterdam next week where the tulip fields will be in full bloom. I shall take photos for a post when I return.
You have been so industrious over the winter June. You have made such beautiful things and the patchwork squares will be made into beautiful quilts, I know. You have so much talent at putting colours and patterns together and have such a good eye. I can just see that quilt on your porch and your 20 new roses coming into bloom.....I just wish that we had enough room for 20 new roses !!!!
Have a lovely week June and thanks so much for your lovely comment today. XXXX

I know how much you love your garden and can only imagine how badly you are itchin' to do some gardening. Sending you a great big warm hug and wishing you a wonderful weekend.

  80. Spring is my favorite season, too, June. It will be arriving for you very soon. We had our first rose blooms of the season this week.

When I was that gorgeous sauce dish with the garlands of pink roses my heart went pitter-pat. ♥

  81. Hi, June,
I know those new roses will look spectacular in your beautiful garden. I always look forward to seeing your peonies, too. I have never been able to grow any here in Texas, but our local grocer told me they would have some cut ones for inside arranging in June so I am going to buy some and make an arrangement for my home. June, you know if you ever come to Texas, I would love for you to visit me here at Bunny Cottage. That invitation is always open from me! I hope you have a fantastic weekend, dear friend. Sending love to you~Vicki

  82. June I have gone through several years of your garden posts praying that somehow your lovely way with garden planning would somehow leap off the computer and into me! We are still working on the outside of the house but with this lovely huge entrance (I wish I could figure out the proper name to call it!) I am daydreaming of what do do for the yard to make it all it can be.Oh friend can I hire you to give me some of your lovely eye for what it to do!!? I know someday it will all come together but I end up planting, digging up,planting, digging up the same plant - wish I could sit down and graph it all out then just plant once!!

My 2 little lilac bushes are blooming for the first time since moving them here 4 years ago! I have a male friend who has a gorgeous lilac bush and he hates it so have gone over and cut loads of his too! I am trying to dry them- have you ever dried lilacs?

Oh so sorry I am rambling on - your gardens just make me so giddy....

  91. My dear sweet June,
may be your garden is a little bit late - but your post is sooo springy: the colors of the tulips, of the fabric, the flowers on the wonderful china and the "harvest of your winter-sowing" - in other words, the pretty results of your winter-enjoyment! It is full of "joie de vivre" and floridity!

  104. Thank goodness we can buy tulips from the store...as there are none in my neck of the woods either.
And I can surely relate with you on the WIND. My most detested weather condition.
HATE IT !!! and we have been having so much of it lately.
I want to get out and get started on things too.......soooooo much that needs to be done. I don't have time for lousy weather.
I love dishes too...and I collect from thrift stores, flea markets, antique shops things I find that delight me.
I'd love to have a big hutch to display them all in.
    I don't quilt...or sew (don't even have a sewing machine)
but I want to start doing some embroider work, might help keep me busy in the winter which I sorely need.
But...I don't know if I can remember how.

  115. June,
Hope everything is great & your just wallowing in your new celebrity on the porch wrapped in patchwork! I went out and bought the Artful Blogging a few days ago, something I don't normally do. Those mags are so expensive & I figure blogging I can see, right. Not this time.I had to have the issue with my favorite blogger. June, I'm so, SO proud for you. The pictures are beautiful of course but the writing. Wow. Great article.
Maybe I'll send it so you can autogragh it for me:)
I hope your doing good & just busy in your garden with the family.
    Love to you sweet friend.

  116. A beautiful quilt and so much work to cut all of those squares – just think of all of the projects to be created now, without interruption. Your lovely blossom photos have inspired me to write down my favorites and design colorful areas to plant - pink is my favorite but I think I will begin with purple!
