wand vs sword

I was lucky enough to have my seven year old
twin grandchildren for a few hours the other day.
 (girl and boy)
They spent most of their time playing in the garden while they
were here because that's where I was.
I was pruning a few trees and shrubs, and as I cut I would drop the
little limbs on the ground as I went along.
Brooke came along to see what I was doing and picked up one of the limbs
and then two more, deciding that one can never have too many wands and flitted off
among the flower beds.
In a few minutes her brother Matthew came by and seeing the limbs on the grass,
said "Oh boy" and grabbed one up and off he went sword fighting with
some invisible (to me) enemy.
This little incident had me smiling all day and pondering on the difference
between the sexes once again.

Sharing a little pretty from the garden today.
my favorite lilac in the garden

The tree below is the same tree as in my last post but a few days
later after every bud has opened.
I love it in this stage.
Reminds me of cotton candy.

The trees in the front are now in bloom so there is an abundance of
scent all over the garden with the lilacs and the trees blooming.

The tree below is the weeping Red Jade.
I love, love, love this tree's habit. It's covered with snow
white blooms from limbs that cascade down to the ground.

Wishing you all a wonderful week!

  1. Your blooms all look so beautiful! I have a niece and a nephew that are close in age (different sides of the family) and it is so fun to see the different ways a boy reacts compared to a girl. Kids makes life fun!

  4. So beautiful June. Your lilacs are so lovely I can almost smell them. We didn't get any blooms this year, most likely a result of the harsh winter. My wisteria which usually blooms at the same time, had not a single bloom either. But the honeysuckle trees has blossoms to make up for the other two and left the yard smelling like heaven. There is nothing like spring to thaw the soul from winter's grip.
Your yard is always a delight to behold.

  5. WOW. You must have the most impressive home and garden in what looks to me an open range. June, the lilacs here are splendid, and ours are finally open too! The last several days have been heavenly for all of us here in Minneapolis; everyone has been out biking, walking their dogs, playing on the lakes and gardening. My husband an I enjoyed the long weekend just cleaning up winter's rage in our garden, but there wasn't too much damage, just a few boxwood that got burnt. Wands and swords...now that's a great title for a book!

Hugs dearest June! You bring us such beauty! Anita

  7. Such stunning photographs; you always manage to infuse them with light and delight! Our lilacs are finished here in England, but the roses are more than making up for this loss.

My parents always used to say that girls and boys react differently with potential playthings, no matter how much you try to make them 'unisex'. I wonder how they'd react if you told your grandson the branch was a magician's wand, and your granddaughter that she was defending the fairies with her jewelled sword ;O)

  8. Wands and swords, I so agree. With many grand kids it is so fun to watch the battles and the blessings of fairies! My lilac is done blooming and I am into full peony blooms. I've picked many bouquets for the house and hope to dry several. Love, love my peonies!! Enjoy working in the garden, I so love this time of the year. Hugs, dear June!!!

  10. Dear June!
Your garden is a little hideaway with all the dreamy flowers.
    Here it is already summer.
We had already 30 degrees and the roses are now starting to bloom.
I think you enjoy your life with your family and you are so right!!!!
I wish you a very happy time June!
    With love,

  12. It must be wonderful to breathe in all that beauty, June!!!

Our aspen are just now beginning to leaf out.

I have a twin brother ~ your grandtwins sound a lot like us when we were small. There was a catalpa tree in the backyard. I used the bean-thingys as green beans when playing house, and my twin brother played swords. :)

    Have a lovely one, June!

  13. Such a cute story with Brooke and Matthew & so true! While walking along the lake with our grandson, we had our pockets filled with sticks and twigs and stones (treasures) and passed grandparents with their grand daughter ... they had swan feathers and leaves and flower petals ... "she collects things" the grand dad said. "so does ours" we replied as we showed our dirt filled hands :-)
Your garden looks like an absolute haven for the senses ♥

  16. Dear June
Aren't twins wonderful... we have a fifteen year old identical grandson's. They used to take great pleasure in playing along if I had their names incorrect.
Your lilacs are heavenly and their perfume is one of my favourites.
I have our little balcony planted with as many pots as I could this year so our Netherlands visitors enjoy them while they are here.
Have a great day my friend.

  20. Amazing! Love the beauty you captured and I can imagine how lovely it is to work and play among such beauty. The fragrance would be an added bonus along with the sound of children at play.
We are still in the daffodil and tulip stage here.

  23. Beautiful blooms in your garden June! The Lilac has all faded here by now and since it's been raining for days, it suddenly went fast, the snowballtree lost all of its 'snow' at once as well ;)
Sword fighting against imaginary enemies, ah, it brings back sweet memories of my own children who did exactly the same, with the necessary noises as well ;)

Indeed so very much alike yet so different....

I have one of each, a son and daughter and growing up was the best to collect every word of funny they would say or how they argued :)

Beauty here is at reach and what a beautiful visit I have had.

  26. The flowers are all so beautiful June.
Perhaps if we instilled different images on our young girls they would be more apt to find amusement with things we consider male. I'm sure she would make a delightful swords woman just like the one in Zorro. Ha!
Hope you are well and enjoying the season...

Your grandchildren are so cute. I know what you mean about a "wand vs sword". I have 2 daughters and 1 son. When they were little they played just like that. So funny! 40. Heavenly, just heavenly. I could die for your lilacs, and i love trees that weep and flower.
It is funny about boys and girls. You can offer unisex toys all you want, but just about every time a boy will pick up a stick and it is automatically a weapon of some sort. Love thinking of you working in the garden with your grandkids...

  52. Good morning June! So happy to see your comment this June morning! Oh before you know it, this month will be over; I do NOT want to think of that yet!

How wonderful that your eldest grandson is graduating from high school now. May he continue his path of greatness in all that he does. I am now teaching high school French, so I sort of know the feeling of seeing these young folks blossom and move on...just thinking about it makes me cry!

Enjoy all the festivities of the season dear June! Anita

  53. Hello June!
Such a happy post...from grandkids to blooms. We lived in a very old house once that was surrounded by lilac bushes. The fragrance was wonderful.
Have you ever heard of viburnum carlesii? We always planted them around our patios or porches as the fragrance was divine in the spring.
I hope all is well with you and send a big hug your way...
