My little 'tar paper shack'

Do you remember this place that I wrote about in May?

Well this is my little getaway in the woods.
It doesn't look very appealing form the outside...

But when I open the door I feel right at home.
This is what it looks like today.

This bed my husband found at the landfill several years ago.
He knew I would love the color and patina on it.

I think I'm going to be redoing it in a more neutral palette soon.
But it will be hard to let go of the way it is,
because it just feels so calming to me.

My husband calls it my little 'Junie bird's nest'. I think of it as my 'little tar paper shack' because my uncle in Florida who was raised in Picabo, Idaho, said all he needed to be happy in life would be a little tar paper shack in Idaho. Well he's been a long way from Idaho all his life, but I know in his heart he's in Idaho.
My husband needed to do some fencing up here last week so we pulled the camp trailer up for Landon and he fenced while Landon and I enjoyed the smell of the aspens and willows. I cleaned the nest up and perused magazines and just enjoyed the time away from home in these beautiful surroundings. I feel so at peace here. A real spiritual connection to this place that cannot be explained. I have got to make more time to enjoy this place. I have got to slow things down a bit and just be.

Sorry everybody! I had to go in and edit because I had the pictures loaded all wonky, and somehow you all came while I was doing that.

What a wonderful and dreamy place to be. Is this close to your home? It's so lovely. Boy it looks small on the outside but you have a lot of things in there. It's just beautiful.

Hi June, I left you the same award on my post yesterday as well as passing it to Tamerie...so now you have two of the same! I love your little getaway! And I love the bed you got from the landfill! My sister is renovating a 1940's cottage and just called to tell me they took a truckload of things to our landfill, and brought a truckload of new treasures back! She found cool mirrors, shelves, etc... I am going with her next time! I would love a little getaway like yours... sigh...

Hey my friend,
I agree that it's time to slow down and just BE. I like that idea. It's amazing when sometimes we feel lost but somehow a special place can find us and remind us of who we are and who we want to be.

Some people don't believe that walls can talk. Maybe they don't. But I beg to differ. I believe that when I'm in a comfortable place, the walls whisper softly to me and remind me that my soul needs peace in order to BE.

I love your space June. I see why you have that special connection to it. You have made it a beautiful reflection of yourself.

listen carefully...I thought I heard a whisper...did you???

I know what you mean about slowing down..... I walk in my gardens in the mornings & most of the time I am alone. It isn't that I don't like the walk but I prefer my husband with me. Then there are the weekends when we can walk......
I tell myself to just sit still.... I am a very impatient person. It is hard for me to sit & slow down.
I really loved your post & I love the little "nest"....

Dear sweet June,

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful "little tar paper shack." I love how you have decorated your sweet and charming getaway, it is so lovely and peaceful looking. The perfect retreat! I love the surrounding woods, too. I can see how you and Landon enjoyed the smell of aspens and willows... Anne of Green Gables would certainly approve. Do you remember when Anne walked home from the train station and picked flowers? When she arrived home she said, "Smell them Marilla, drink them in." I just love that!

I love the color you painted your shack and the furniture is fabulous. Is that a Martha Stewart chenille bedspread? I have one exactly like that covering an old couch in our library. I love the big pillow and the mirror, and the floral paintings, well I love it all! The bed your husband rescued for you is so pretty and vintage. I love it and the quilt, and the netting above the bed. You did a wonderful job!

I love how your husband calls it "Junie birds nest." That is so sweet of him, and it is so sweet of you to think of your uncle. I hope you will take time to enjoy it more. On my blog I have a favorite poem I want to share with you.

O gift of God! A perfect day, Whereon shall no man work but play, Whereon it is enough for me not to be doing but to be.~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Isn't that wonderful? A good reminder for us all! Thank you for sharing your special place! I feel blessed to see it!

Love and hugs to you dear friend,
Paula

P.S. Thank you for your sweet comments. You are always on time any time you visit! I will see about adding that gadget. Can you believe that vintage photo was marked $2 and it was 20% off that! I was thrilled! I am like you and love to decorate with things that have been loved by others, and wonder about who owned them.

This little place is just awesome, June! Do you go here and sleep sometimes?? You must if you have a bed. How peaceful this must be. The outside certainly doesn't reflect the beautiful way you have created the inside.

I SO hear you in your feelings. I have a necklace from Brighton (sp?) The outside of the locket says "BE" and when you lift up the first overlay, it says "JUST BE". This locket and these words speak to me on so many levels. I believe we are kindred spirits, my new friend!

It's so nice to meet you, June, and thank you so much for leaving a comment on my post today! It's good to meet other moms who share their stories and blessings of their children with disabilities. They are so special, but what I know most is what a powerful instrument they are in God's hands! Through our daughter, we have become and are still becoming more loving, more giving, happier with less, and contented to "be", as you so eloquently put it. To see our kids, just "be" is a wonderment in itself, and they teach us so very much. As for your little tar shack, I agree with the comment before me - I wouldn't change a thing! It's beautiful the way it is. I understand the desire to change things after you've lived with it for awhile - I do it all the time! But think about it before you leap - the decor you have now seems to fit it so perfectly, I can't imagine it any other way - although I know it would be just as beautiful! Take care, June, and God bless you!

The Vintage Vagablonde said...

I agree with the comment before mine...sometimes we see different styles~like the white on white that is so popular right now.

The mismatched vintage seems to be taking a back seat to the white and cream decor....I am a late bloomer and I love a bit of color and variety. I always said I hated white.... and would never decorate in an all white color scheme"never say never"! I love the all white palette that I am seeing on blogs and in the magazines.

As for my home......it will never be ALL white....maybe when I own a little cottage.

I am being very long winded~sorry. MY point..
your little hide~A~way just seems to be decorated so warm and happy. I love the bed~!
Whatever you decide....it will be wonderful but I think it is a little slice of Heaven right now :)

Hello June, Not only is the color scheme of your studio so me, we could easily go to the movies together. Now that I visited every blogger at 'were bloggers create', there is more time for reading, so I took time to read your profile. The green mile is a favorite of mine too, as are all Jane Austens, well read your own list to know my favorites ;-)! I never heard of the Angelman syndrome before, so I googled it. It seems to me that you are such a positive and happy person. I feel a sense of optimistic thinking, of thinking that people who are different are an enrichment, not a problem. I am sure that sometimes you encounter problems. I think we are kindred spirits. My son is autistic (diagnosed pdd-nos) but he doesn't want me to blog about him, so I respect that. He is different than other kids, but he is sweet and can be so funny, he is the light of our lives (don't let my daughter read this! Ok he is one light in one eye and she is the other light in the other eye!). Often I meet people who simply don't understand that, being different is seen as being a problem. Of course we meet problems, but who will not? Seeing other people as problems tells me more about those judges than about the 'different' people.
Your place is simply stunning, I told you that I love your studio already, this shack is gorgeous too! And I took a peek in your garden: it all looks like heaven to me. And I wouldn't change that color of the bed. It is so authentic like this and when I study your photos, it seems to me that it matches that flowered fabric perfectly. Have a great start of the week!

June, that is absolutely amazing. The place really looks tiny and so simple from the outside, and when you open the door it is like stepping into a true dream world. I LOVE love love what you did with the place. the pastel colors are fantastic, the bed, the sofa, the floral design on the chair, the pale yellow walls, well.... it is just breath-taking. I can see why you love being there so much and that you make such a spiritual connection to it. I could easily do the same!! I will picture you there in my mind when I think of you, it suits you so well!! thinkin' of ya, Debby
